At the start of his slimming campaign, Coun Goddard said: "I’m doing this to put something back into the Wellspring and for my own health. I am planning to cut down on the civic dinners and do more exercise." Dave’s aim was to lose 3 stones in 3 months and from his sponsors he was “looking for 50p per pound of weight loss, or £20 for the full three stone. This will give me an incentive and will be good news too for everyone at The Wellspring." On a typical Sunday, his intake included egg on toast for breakfast, soup, cheese and biscuits at lunch, a roast dinner ‘with all the trimmings’, a bottle of red wine and a large bag of crisps or nuts. "It all mounts up," he said. Dave was inspired on his fund-raising mission after the Harvey Street charity gave a presentation at a council meeting. He said: "The Wellspring Centre does fantastic work delivering meals 365 days a year for homeless people and so much more. It is entirely supported by voluntary donations and I want to do my bit to help. If I can lose weight for a good cause then we both benefit." In February 2011, Dave weighed in at 18st 12lb, regularly enjoying civic dinners, as well as snacking on crisps, nuts and biscuits and downing beer and red wine. His healthy eating and exercise regime resulted in him exceeding his hoped-for weight loss of 3 stones by an extra 6lbs, weighing in at 15st 6lb by May 2011. Dave is pictured above presenting a cheque for £4,000 to The Wellspring drop-in centre in Stockport, raised from sponsorship of his slimming mission.
